Perhaps these tips can help you easily memorize bible verses!
First, let’s go over the steps. Remember, there is no one successful way for everyone. These steps are used by many people, but may not work as well for you. Experiment! See what works!
Step 1: Memorize the Location
Many expert bible teachers, and people that know many bible verses, suggest knowing the book, chapter, and verse first. This allows you to quickly access it (in case you forget). It is also a great starting point, as it is usually short.
Step 2: Know the Meaning
Learn what bible verses are about. Know the meaning of them. If you are learning a verse, such as Romans 3:23, know what it means before you start memorizing the words. You should read the bible verses around the one you are memorizing.
Step 3: Repeat It
Repeating bible verses causes them to be imprinted into your brain. Repeat them, starting with the location, and then the verse, until you remember it.
Helpful Tips:
Here are some tips that may help you in memorizing them or working through each step.
Tip 1: Use Flashcards
Flashcards are small and easy to store. You can easily use them at a moment’s notice. Write the location on the front, and the verse on the back. You can also write the version (KJV, NIV, etc.) on the bottom. Make it a daily or weekly thing to quiz yourself on the verses you know.
Tip 2: Write It
Write bible verses out, multiple times. You can write bible verses out on a piece of paper. Fold up the paper, and put it in your pocket (folding the part that you have the verse on out of sight). Then, at points throughout the day, write down bible verses from memory on the paper. If you can’t remember it, look back at it.
Tip 3: Apply It
Think about the meaning of bible verses. Then try to apply it to your life. Try to think about what it means. Use its meaning to help you do better. Next time you have difficulty recalling the verse, you can then think of when you applied it, and it should help you remember.
Tip 4: Hear It
Perhaps you have an audio Bible, or maybe you just have a tape recorder/smart phone. Either way, record yourself (or someone else) reading bible verses out loud. On your way to work, to the grocery store, to the library, or other places, listen to it. Repeat the bible verses out loud to yourself, and then hear it again.
Tip 5: Collaborate
Memorize bible verses as a group. If you attend a bible study, or want your kids/spouse/family to learn the verse, work on memorizing bible verses together. Quiz each other. Figure out a method that works for everyone.
Tip 6: Take a Break
If you are having difficulty memorizing bible verses, take a break. Don’t spend forever trying at it. Drink some water, focus on something else, and come back to it.
Tip 7: Associate an Action to the Verse
Try doing something (jumping, walking, eating, etc.) while you either repeat bible verses in your head or read them. Not only will this give you an energy boost, but it will help you associate the action with the verse. Next time you do the same thing, you will remember the verse.
Tip 8: Change the Background
Set bible verses as the background of your phone or computer. If you’re someone who uses their computer or phone often, this will greatly help. You’ll see it every time you look at your desktop or homepage.
