They are incessant messes that are hard for many people to catch – that’s why they accumulate stuff so quickly.
Do you have a junk drawer? If you think about it, you probably do (the odds are extremely high). Do not fear! Here are some very quick steps to bring that junk drawer to your knees! Muah-ha-ha!
Step 1. Pull it All Out
The best way to start is to assess the situation. How do we do that? Take everything out, of course! Organizing your drawer without removing the items inside will just create more confusion. You may feel stressed by seeing the whole mess, but it will be worth it later. Also, by just seeing everything out on the floor, you will realize just how much of it is junk. Make sure that you don’t mix it all up more when you take the items out, as that may create more worries for you in the next steps
Once you have pulled everything out, it’s time to move to step two.
Step 2. Clean the Drawer
With the drawer full of junk, you may have never known how dirty the inside of it was. You don’t want you organized drawer to be dirty, so did a quick wipe down. Make sure you dump any debris out of the drawer before doing so. By cleaning the drawer, you will feel as if you have a blank slate to start from.
Now it’s time to identify common junk items, and then organize them.
Step 3. Organize Common Junk Items
When organizing your junk drawer, you’ll need to know some common items that are in almost every junk drawer. Pens, manuals, and other office supplies are the most common. Random papers are also found frequently.
For pens, you’ll want to test them all out. Gather all pens together. The ones that don’t have ink should be tossed. The good ones should be put in a good spot for pens. You’ll find the office an ideal place for pens and office supplies. Put your pens with the rest of the pens, and then continue on.
Manuals are also found in junk drawers. Don’t throw these out if they seem at all important! They can be necessary for proper usage and repairing of your belongings. Instead, do this:
- Pull them all together
- Sort the important ones from the unimportant ones
- Alphabetize the manuals
- Put them in a filing cabinet or another suitable place
Once you have all of the manuals organized, you can find a good place for them. Having them in a box in the garage or in a filing cabinet in the office are two of the best places to store them.
Now, on to the rest of the things you’ll find in the junk drawer.
Step 4. Sort the Rest
Since every junk drawer is unique, one can’t predict everything that will be in it. So, you’ll have to follow a few steps.
First, you’ll want to go through everything and toss out clutter. Do you really need that button, or that ripped eraser, or that candy wrapper? Toss out the trash, and get rid of what you don’t need.
Now sort other objects. Some objects can’t be sorted because of how unique or scarce they are. Put those aside. You may find some random papers. Sort them by topic, and then find their right place depending on the topic. Note: A filing cabinet is great for papers.
Every similar object should be grouped together. You’ll need to keep it together for when you store it all.
Step 5. Find Ways to Store it All
Finally, it’s time to store the rest of the items. Many papers and manuals should go in a filing cabinet. Sadly, not everything is suitable for a filing cabinet or something else, so you’ll need some alternative forms of storage. Here are the best of the storage items you can utilize:
