A Christmas party is an awesome way to celebrate Christmas with friends, family, and coworkers. Whether you want to spread the Christmas cheer, start the season off right, or just have a good time, a Christmas party is a great thing to do. With these three steps, you’ll be on your way to hosting an excellent Christmas party.

Step 1: Plan the Date and Time

When will you have the Christmas party? Because of work and semester exams, many people choose Friday nights or Saturday nights. You may also choose any convenient time during Christmas break. Contact your friends and talk to your family about any times that may work for them. Try to schedule the Christmas party at least two weeks in advance so you can have time to plan and collect RSVPs.

You will also want to decide on a time. If it’s an all-nighter, then you’ll just have to decide what time to start, such as 8pm. Everyone else will just leave when they want the next morning. If it’s not an all-nighter, then you have to find a time to start and end, such as 6pm and 12am.

Once you’ve officially scheduled a day and time, you can continue on to step two.

Step 2: Plan the Activities

This is the fun part. Christmas parties have a wide range of activities, so you’ll have a lot to choose from. Whether you want movies, contests, games, you can do it at a Christmas party, as long as they have something to do with the theme. Know your audience, and then cater to their wants and interests. Here are some great ideas:

Watch movies

Make gingerbread houses – Whether it is a competition or a group project, it’s fun for all ages.

Play some Christmas music – A party without music isn’t as fun. Christmas music is the perfect touch for any Christmas party.

Play board games – Board games are fun ways to relax and have fun with others before the bigger activities (movies, competitions, etc.) start.

Sing carols – It’s fun for people of all ages, as long as they sing. Offer alternatives so that those who are shy don’t feel left out.

Do a gift exchange – Exchanging presents is a fun thing for everyone to look forward to, and it is a cheap way to give others gifts.

Ugly Christmas sweater contest – It’s always fun to dress up and compete on who’s Christmas sweater is uglier.

There are so many neat things you can do. For more holiday ideas, check out the Family Holiday Ideas article, or read more at the bottom.

Once you have a decent list of events, start setting them up, and then go on to step three to make accommodations, such as food and setup.

Step 3: Make Accommodations

The last step before starting the party is making accommodations. This includes setting up the necessary furniture and layout to include everyone. It also means preparing food and making any other necessary accommodations so that your party will rock.

First you need to set up the room(s) that the party will be in. Make sure everyone has a comfortable place to sit. Wherever you play have the activities, everyone needs to be able to see and participate, or else they’ll feel left out. Depending on what you are doing during the party, you may have to make different accommodations. Here are some of our articles, based on activity, for you to make appropriate accommodations for your guests:

Now onto food, one of the best parts of any party. How are you going to tackle the big task of making the food? Many people will expect a lot out of a Christmas party, but you don’t have to tackle food yourself. Here are great ideas for delegating the tasks and lightening up your load:

Have a potluck – Potlucks are great for having a ton of food from different people, and they also start conversations. Don’t make it too formal though, or else it will feel like a dinner party.

Cookie exchange – Desserts are crucial to a Christmas party, so having a cookie exchange adds some variety to your party.

You can also consider pizza, fast food, or catering. Going all-out and making everything homemade isn’t necessary. Store-bought desserts are great, and people will appreciate the food no matter what.
