Here are five easy steps to help you decorate for Autumn!
Step 1: Get A Fall Wreath
If you want to decorate for autumn, try buying or making your own fall wreath. Wreaths are a great way to make your house seem ready for any season. These wreaths are generally decorated with red, orange, and/or yellow leaves (particularly maple leaves), have some pumpkins, berries (particularly cranberries), and other bright colored fruits in them. These don’t have to be real fruits, leaves, and decorations, they just have to look festive.
If you don’t have either the time, energy, or desire to make your own wreath, you can buy wreaths from Amazon.com. Here are some of their best options:
The Tiny Land 22 Inch Wreath has all of the above elements I mentioned, and has pinecones on it. As with all wreaths, be careful not to knock the parts off of it.
The Best Toy Home 24 Inch Autumn Door Wreath is also really nice. It is more expensive than the other option, but it is larger and has more pieces on it than the other one.
One particularly nice thing about these wreaths is that you can reuse them from year to year.
Pro Wreath Tips: If you want your wreath to keep all of its pretty colors, be sure to follow these tips:
- Keep your wreath out of direct sunlight. The sun’s UV radiation causes almost every color to fade away (flowers, paint, shirts, wood, leaves, fall wreaths, etc.).
- Make sure your wreath is steadily fastened! You don’t want your wreath to get knocked over every time the wind blows, or a bird lands on it, or someone knocks on your door.
- Dry your wreath after heavy storms. The last thing you want is for your wreath to grow mold or mildew on it. Keep it dry and, if needed, clean it.
Bonus tip: Some people like to spray a fall scent onto their wreaths. For some people it’s pumpkin spice, others like cinnamon, and still others like other scents. If you think that’s a good idea (and it won’t bother you or your neighbors), consider it as an option.
Step 2: Decorate with Red, Orange, and Yellow
Red, orange, and yellow are the traditional colors used to decorate for fall. Don’t be shy about putting this color everywhere. You can buy plastic fall leaves and spread them all over your tables and other furniture. Make everything in your house red, orange, and yellow.
Décor Tips:
- Use Fall Plates and Napkins to liven up the dinner table.
- Put Leaves and Pinecones, Berries, and Pumpkins everywhere around your house!
Step 3: Use Pumpkins
If you decorate for autumn, you should decorate with pumpkins (faux or real). Put them by your front door, on your table, in your kitchen, and near everything. Few things say “It’s Autumn!” as much as pumpkins do. Most people use orange pumpkins, but some people use yellow, red, white, or purple pumpkins to spruce up their house. Pumpkins come in almost every color imaginable.
Many people use faux pumpkins, as they don’t decay/rot, are reusable year after year, aren’t heavy, and are cheaper than real pumpkins. If you are going to use faux pumpkins, you should consider either this package of Assorted Frost Gourds and Pumpkins, which has a large variety of different shapes and colors, or the Winlyn Package of 6 Pumpkins (which has varying sizes but all Orange).
Step 4: Use Signs and Scents
Consider using signs and scents to bring back that autumn feeling into your house. When you decorate for Autumn, you may be tempted to solely decorate with leaves, wreaths, and other natural items, but signs and smells also bring back fond memories. You can put cute signs in various places in your house, such as your kitchen, or your dining room. The Rustic Pumpkin Welcome Sign is one example of a cute sign, as is the Happy Fall Yall sign.
Scents and smells are harder to coordinate. Some people choose to have candles, while others say that candles are too strong or artificial smelling. Other people get cinnamon sticks, or perfumes of sorts, and put them on things. Whether or not you choose to make things smell like Autumn is completely up to.
Step 5: Change Out Your Blankets and Covers
If you want to decorate for Autumn, you should include as many blankets, pillow covers, sheets, and table cloths that are fall themed as you can. This will make things feel more like Autumn, and certainly will make everything seem more festive. If you’re looking for a good Autumn blanket, think about the Morgan Home Autumn Throw Blanket, and if you’re looking for pillow covers, consider the Anickal Autumn Pillow Covers.
